  5. the Charles F. Richter Seismological Laboratory at the University
  6. of California at Santa Cruz. I had spent the previous days at home
  7. waiting for phone, electricity and gas service. I was happy to walk
  8. through my door with my first piece of mail since the Oct. 17
  9. earthquake: TIME. Imagine my surprise at seeing your article on
  10. hidden faults in the earth, "Shaking Down Deep" (SCIENCE, Oct.
  11. 23). Thanks for the information; your timing was impeccable.
